The Comprehensive Prostate Cancer Program at Hartford Hospital will host the 3rd Annual Run/Walk for Prostate Cancer on Sunday, September 7th. This is a timed 5K Run, 3K Walk at Hartford's scenic Riverside Park. This will be a fun, family-oriented event that is designed to meet the needs of both runners and walkers. This is a professionally managed race and chip timing services are being provided by The Last Mile Racing, LLC. The course layout is available here.
Why Is This Event Important?Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in United States men, accounting for 33% of cases. Of the over 1.4 million Americans diagnosed with cancer this year, some 218,820 will have prostate cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, over 27,000 men will die of prostate cancer this year, making prostate cancer the second leading cause of cancer death in men. African American men have a higher incidence of and mortality from prostate cancer.
Funds raised through last year's event contributed significantly to the Comprehensive Prostate Cancer Program being able to provide over 150 free prostate cancer screening exams to men in need and we have reached over 500 men with prostate cancer education and outreach materials. The demand for education and free screening services increases each year, and we have already seen a 150% increase in the number of needed free prostate cancer screening clinics.
Ask for sponsorship from your friends, family, co-workers, and employer. The proceeds from this event will be used by the Comprehensive Prostate Cancer Program at Hartford Hospital to reach the underserved and high-risk populations of the metropolitan Hartford area with prostate cancer education and free screening services. The more money we raise through this event, the more men we will be able to reach. Registration forms will be available in the upcoming months.
One of the best ways to participate in this event is to form a team. A team can be as small as just two people- or can be as large as you want. Bring your family, friends and dogs to help support this event!
We look forward to seeing you on September 7th!
